Argentina Continue Title Defence

Argentina continue their title defence on Saturday when they meet Switzerland in Kansas City. Victory for the reigning champions would secure another semi-final for them, while Switzerland are attempting to reach the final four of the competition for the first time.

Match Analysis

Argentina have made life difficult for themselves in both knockout matches so far, but the holders continue to find ways to survive.

After being pushed all the way by Cape Verde in the round of 32, Lionel Scaloni’s side looked to be heading out against Egypt when they trailed by two goals with little time remaining.

Instead, Argentina produced one of the comebacks of the tournament. Romero gave La Albiceleste hope before Messi atoned for an earlier missed penalty to level the scores, and Fernandez completed the turnaround late on to send the holders through.

It was another example of the resilience that has become a defining feature of this Argentina side. While the squad may no longer possess the energy of four years ago, they continue to combine experience, quality and determination whenever the pressure rises.

Argentina are now unbeaten in 11 matches in this tournament and have scored at least twice in every game during that run.

Switzerland have taken a very different route to the quarter-finals. Yakin’s side opened with a frustrating draw against Qatar before responding impressively to finish top of Group B ahead of the knockout stages.

Victories over Algeria and Colombia followed, with Gregor Kobel emerging as the hero in the latter after saving penalties in Vancouver. Switzerland’s progress has been built on discipline and defensive organisation rather than attacking flair.

The Swiss have yet to trail in any match throughout this tournament, including its qualification, and they will attempt to frustrate Argentina for as long as possible on Saturday evening.

History provides little encouragement, however, as Switzerland have never beaten Argentina and lost both previous meetings between the nations in the tournament.

Team News

Argentina are expected to have a fully fit squad available in Kansas City. Messi will continue to captain the side, while Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez are competing for the opportunity to partner him in attack.

Scaloni must also decide between Medina and Tagliafico at left-back. Switzerland have several fitness concerns ahead of the quarter-final.

Aebischer, Jaquez and Manzambi are all doubts, with the latter missing the previous round because of a knee injury. Jashari deputised impressively against Colombia and could keep his place in midfield if Manzambi is unable to return.

Embolo is expected to continue leading the line despite competition from Zeki Amdouni and Cedric Itten.

Odds and Tips

Switzerland have the defensive structure to make this an awkward evening for the world champions, particularly if they can keep the game level deep into the second half.

Argentina have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to respond under pressure, though, and their experience in knockout football may prove decisive once again.

Tip: Argentina to win at 1.75.
