Chelsea Look to Reignite Top-Four Push
Chelsea return to PL action on Saturday evening as Newcastle United travel to Stamford Bridge for the Gameweek 30 clash. Following a difficult CL night earlier in the week, the London side are looking for a response while attempting to strengthen their chances of returning to Europe’s elite competition next season.
While Chelsea suffered a heavy defeat in Paris, Newcastle still have a realistic opportunity to reach the CL quarter-finals after drawing 1–1 with Barcelona at St James’ Park earlier this week.
Match Analysis
Chelsea’s trip to face Paris Saint-Germain ultimately turned into a painful evening for Liam Rosenior’s side. For much of the match the Blues competed well, but the game slipped away during the final quarter. A mistake from Filip Jorgensen gifted PSG a third goal, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added two more after Vitinha’s strike in the 74th minute. The 5–2 defeat leaves Chelsea facing an uphill task ahead of the return leg.
Back in domestic competition, the focus now shifts to securing valuable league points. Chelsea currently sit fifth in the league with 48 points, the same total as sixth-placed Liverpool. Meanwhile, Manchester United and Aston Villa occupy third and fourth place respectively with 51 points.
Chelsea’s recent league form has been somewhat inconsistent. The Blues have drawn 2–2 with Leeds United and 1–1 with Burnley in their last two league matches. Defensively, the team has struggled to find stability under Rosenior, keeping just three clean sheets in 16 games since his arrival.
Results at Stamford Bridge have also been mixed. Chelsea have not won a home league match since their comeback victory over West Ham in January.
Newcastle arrive in London with their attention partially focused on next week’s return leg against Barcelona. Tuesday’s 1–1 draw at St James’ Park means the tie remains finely balanced heading into the decisive match in Spain.
In the PL, Eddie Howe’s side currently sit 12th, nine points behind fifth place in the race for CL qualification.
Historically, Stamford Bridge has been an unhappy hunting ground for Newcastle. Since Papiss Cissé’s 2–0 victory in May 2012, the Magpies have failed to win a league game at Chelsea. In fact, every league visit to West London since that day has ended in defeat, extending a 12-match winless run at Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle will hope to take advantage of Chelsea’s defensive vulnerabilities, but the visitors have also struggled away from home this season. The Magpies have scored just 14 goals in 14 PL away matches.
Team News
Liam Rosenior must make a decision regarding his goalkeeping situation ahead of Saturday’s match. Filip Jorgensen’s costly error in Paris has prompted calls for Robert Sanchez to return between the posts, although Sanchez himself has endured some shaky performances against Arsenal and Wrexham earlier this season.
Up front, Joao Pedro is expected to lead the line for Chelsea. The Brazilian has scored 14 PL goals, trailing only three players in the league. The Chelsea forward is also the league’s top scorer in 2026 with eight goals.
Chelsea are close to full strength otherwise. Levi Colwill remains the only long-term absentee due to a knee injury, while Estevao and Jamie Gittens could return to the squad.
Newcastle will once again be without several key players. Fabian Schär (ankle), Bruno Guimarães (thigh) and Emil Krafth (knee) are all sidelined for the trip to London.
Lewis Miley is nearing a return but Saturday’s match is expected to come too soon for the midfielder.
There is also uncertainty over Anthony Gordon’s involvement. The winger had been unwell ahead of the midweek CL clash, and Eddie Howe may decide whether to start him or preserve his fitness for the return leg against Barcelona.
Odds and Tips
Chelsea have been prolific going forward under Rosenior but remain vulnerable defensively, which could present Newcastle with opportunities.
However, the Blues appear more desperate for points in the race for CL qualification, and Newcastle’s poor away record suggests the hosts may have the edge.
Tip: Chelsea win at 1.82.
