Decisive WC Qualifiers – Preview

The European WC qualifiers enters it’s final period, with the group stages being concluded this coming week. With several teams looking to confirm their place in next summer’s tournament, let’s take a quick look at the upcoming action!

Friday Action

Finland host Malta in group G at 6 PM early Friday evening, with the home side at least having a marginal chance of grabbing a 2nd place in the group, but that would take more or less a miracle, considering Poland only need one point against Netherlands and Malta to keep them at bay.

Later on Friday evening, there are a few more matches to look forward to, with Poland – Netherlands the one to really keep an eye on. The hosts managed a draw when they played Netherlands away, but Poland’s loss to Finland earlier in the qualifiers was a big blow. Considering Poland’s last match is away at Malta, a point is enough to secure 2nd place, with the Dutch goal difference likely way too good for Poland to overtake them if they end up on the same points.

In Group L, Croatia are massive favourites against Faroe Islands, with the former securing qualification 100% with a point in this match. Meanwhile, Montenegro are expected to beat Gibraltar, with the latter team currently on 0 points and with a goal difference of 2-20.

In group A, Slovakia are looking to beat Northern Ireland, setting themselves up for a decider away at Germany next week. Germany are expected to beat Luxembourg easily away from home, meaning both Slovakia and Germany will be on 12 points ahead of the decider.

Saturday and Sunday – The Weekend Highlights

There is one afternoon match on Saturday, with Kazakhstan hosting Belgium. The visitors are expected to win this one, but the hosts are on 7 points from 7 matches and should not be underestimated. Belgium will secure top spot in Group J with a win here, though, and they’re certainly huge favourites in this match.

Early in the evening, we’ve got four matches to look forward to, including Georgia – Spain and Türkiye – Bulgaria. Spain and Türkiye are massive favourites in those two matches. The former have a goal difference of 15-0 so far in the qualifiers, and are looking likely to secure the group win ahead of Vincenzo Montella’s team.

Wales are expected to beat Liechtenstein comfortably away, as is the case with Austria who are huge odds favourites in Cyprus.

Sweden are having a nightmare of a qualifier, with the surprise bronze winner from 1994 at the bottom of their qualifying group with only 1 point in four matches. Switzerland host the Swedes Saturday evening, with the visiting supporters hoping to see something completely different from a side that have been underperforming for a while now. Meanwhile, Kosovo – who have beaten Sweden two times in these qualifiers, are away at Slovenia, with these two teams most likely fighting for the playoff spot behind the Swiss team.

Bosnia take on Romania in an important match in Group H. The hosts from Bosnia are on 13 points ahead of this match, with Romania 3 points behind them. Scotland are desperate for a win away at Greece, which would open up the door for a “final” against Denmark next week for the top spot in their group. Denmark are expected to get the job done at home against Belarus Saturday evening.

France are in action on Sunday away at Azerbaijan, with Albania hosting England. Italy, Ireland and Serbia are also in action on Sunday, so there’s plenty to look forward to this weekend for anyone looking for some international football action.
