Key Madrid Derby Showdown
One of the standout fixtures in the Spanish calendar takes centre stage this evening, as Real Madrid host Atlético Madrid at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid sit second in the league, four points behind Barcelona, while Atlético occupy third place, nine points adrift of their city rivals.
Match Analysis
Real Madrid approach the derby under increasing pressure in the title race. Recent league defeats to Osasuna and Getafe have reduced their margin for error, and depending on Barcelona’s result earlier in the day, the gap at the top could stretch further.
That said, Alvaro Arbeloa’s side have responded well across competitions. They arrive on the back of four consecutive wins, including league victories over Celta Vigo and Elche, and hold a strong domestic record of 21 wins, three draws and four defeats from 28 matches.
At home, Real Madrid have been particularly effective, winning 12 of their 14 league games at the Bernabeu this season.
Their midweek success in Europe will also provide momentum. A 2–1 win over Manchester City in the second leg of their CL last-16 tie secured a 5–1 aggregate victory, booking a quarter-final meeting with Bayern Munich.
With ambitions of securing both the league title and the CL, Real Madrid will also have added motivation to respond after their 5–2 defeat to Atlético earlier this season.
The recent head-to-head record highlights how competitive this fixture has been. Four of the last six league meetings have ended in draws, and Real Madrid have not beaten Atlético at the Bernabeu in the league since December 2021, with the visitors earning a point on each of their last three visits.
Atlético, meanwhile, are no longer directly involved in the title race. Diego Simeone’s side sit nine points behind Real Madrid and 13 behind Barcelona, but remain secure in the top four, holding a 13-point advantage over fifth-placed Real Betis.
They continue to compete on multiple fronts. Despite a 3–2 defeat to Tottenham in midweek, Atlético progressed to the CL quarter-finals, where they will face Barcelona. They are also preparing for the Spanish cup final against Real Sociedad on April 18.
Team News and Injury News
Real Madrid will be without Eder Militao (hamstring), Dani Ceballos (calf), Rodrygo (knee) and Thibaut Courtois (thigh). However, Ferland Mendy, David Alaba and Raul Asencio could return to the squad, while Jude Bellingham is available again after recovering from a hamstring issue.
Kylian Mbappe made his comeback from injury against Manchester City and is expected to feature alongside Vinicius Junior in attack. Alvaro Carreras is also in line to return at left-back.
For Atlético, Pablo Barrios (thigh) and Rodrigo Mendoza (muscle) are ruled out, while Jan Oblak remains a doubt with a hip issue. If he is unavailable, Juan Musso is expected to continue in goal. In defence, Marc Pubill could return, with Antoine Griezmann a potential option from the bench.
Julian Alvarez, who has scored 17 goals this season, is expected to play a key role in the final third.
Odds and Tips
Recent meetings between the sides have been closely contested, and Atlético have proven difficult opponents for Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in recent seasons.
However, Real Madrid’s home form, combined with their recent run of results and the return of key attacking players, could prove decisive.
Tip: Real Madrid to win at 1.85.
