Preview: Rejuvenated Red Devils in London
Man Utd celebrated a huge win against their city rivals Man City last weekend in Carrick’s first match in charge after his return to the club. Arsenal are odds favourites at 1.55 in Sunday’s clash between Arsenal and Man Utd in London, and we’ve taken a closer look at Sunday’s top fixture below!
Arsenal – Man Utd
Emirates Stadium – 25.01 @ 17:30 CET
What to expect from Arsenal
Arsenal are flying at the minute, having beaten Inter 3-1 in Milan midweek in the CL and Chelsea 3-2 away in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final and sitting comfortably on top of the standings both in England and in Europe. The draw away at Nottingham Forest last weekend was a setback, but with Man City losing the Manchester derby, the Gunners ended up gaining a point on their main rivals for the title despite the disappointing result in Nottingham.
The Gunners are now favourites both in the PL and in the CL, with the odds on them winning the league at 1.18, and the odds on them to lift the CL trophy in May at 4.50.
Having already qualified for the next stage of the CL and ensuring winning the League Stage, Arsenal won’t have to worry about their upcoming CL fixture next week coming into this weekend’s big game. Arteta will definitely want his team to win their 8th and final League Stage match, ensuring a perfect record in the competition, but the Man Utd match is by far the highest priority at this stage. Considering Man City host Wolves the day before, there is a big chance that the gap between them will be down to 4 points come Sunday afternoon.
Calafiori, who scored the winner when these two teams met each other on their opening day of the league, is out with injury, as is Hincapie, but otherwise Arteta has a fairly healthy squad at his disposal. Gabriel Jesus’ two goals against Inter this week must also have been encouraging for the Arsenal manager.
Arsenal are expected to start with their strongest squad and rather rest players in their home match against Kairat next week ahead of their fixture against Leeds the following weekend, and they’ll hope to win their 10th home match in the league this season on Sunday. They’ve registered 9 wins in 11 so far and are still undefeated at home in the league this season.
Arsenal are huge odds favourites this weekend, with Both Teams to Score in this one at 1.75.
What to expect from Man Utd
Man Utd had plenty of reason to celebrate last weekend when they defeated Man City 2-0 in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick’s side were heavily praised for their performance against their city rivals, though City’s loss midweek in Europe could hint at deeper issues in the blue side of the city.
Before their big 2-0 win against Man City, the Red Devils were knocked out of the cup by Brighton after having drawn 3 matches in a row in the league, namely against Wolves, Leeds and Burnley. The Manchester derby is a different beast altogether, though, and the win against Pep’s side will definitely have boosted the confidence at Man Utd.
Similar to Arsenal, the visitors have a fairly healthy squad going into the weekend, with Zirkzee and de Ligt the main absentees to consider for manager Michael Carrick. Man Utd are currently at 6.10 to win in London this weekend, and at 5.50 to be ahead at half-time.
A win here would really re-ignite Man Utd’s top 4 ambitions, though it would also help their city rivals Man City as they continue playing catch-up with the league leaders from London. Which team will be celebrating come Sunday evening?
