Preview: The Red Devils visit Liverpool
Liverpool host Man Utd this weekend as the PL returns with some great fixtures after the international break. With the hosts having lost two league matches in a row, Man Utd are hopeful of causing a major upset in Liverpool. Let’s take a closer look at this weekend’s massive match from England!
Can Liverpool get back to winning ways
Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been struggling lately after a positive start to the season, at least in terms of points secured. Three losses in a row, against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea, have suddenly made Arsenal odds favourites to win the league, but a win against their rivals from Manchester could get them back on track again. Here are their next league 5 matches:
Man Utd (H)
Brentford (A)
Aston Villa (H)
Man City (A)
Nottingham Forest (H)
Liverpool are huge favourites in this match, currently at 1.60 to win, whereas a Man Utd win stands at 5.30. Their opponents haven’t won at Anfield in their last 9 PL matches, so the home supporters will feel confident going into this match, despite their recent dip in form. It is also worth mentioning that all of Liverpool’s losses this season has come away from home, meaning they have actually won all 5 of their home matches this season (all tournaments included), including their win against Arsenal in August.
Alisson is still out for Liverpool, meaning Mamardashvili will start between the posts, but both Gravenberch and Konaté should be ok to feature after injury doubts. Florian Wirtz is still looking for his first goal or assist for his new club, and he could be benched here giving Szoboszlai a starting spot. The home supporters will also be hoping to see Salah continue scoring and assisting against Man Utd, with the Egyptian having both more goals and assists than any other player in PL history. Should the Egyptian wizard and Wirtz find any form of chemistry going forward, Liverpool will start looking extremely dangerous again.
Defensively, Liverpool have struggled so far this season, having conceded 9 goals in 7 matches. Slot will certainly hope to see his team tighten up in defense as the season progresses. Liverpool are still without a draw so far this season, with a draw in this match currently at 4.35.
Gakpo and Isak will most likely start, with Ekitike also a potential starter depending on Slot’s tactical decisions on the day. The Dutch manager will hope to see Isak finding his form for Liverpool soon, after a fairly weak start at his new club.
Looking at the goalscorer odds for this match, here are the first goalscorer odds for a few of their players:
Isak – 5.00
Ekitike – 5.00
Salah – 5.50
Gakpo – 7.50
Could a win be the turning point Man Utd need?
Man Utd lost their opening match this season, but it was against Arsenal and despite losing there was plenty of optimism at the club due to a fairly decent performance and some big signings. A lot of that optimism ebbed away in the subsequent weeks however, due to an unimpressive draw at Fulham and a loss to Grimsby in the League Cup. With seven matches played, Man Utd are currently 10th in the league, having only won 3 of their first matches and having a goal difference of -2.
Liverpool away is definitely not the match Amorim would have wanted this weekend after the international break, but it’s the match they’ve been handed. Here are Man Utd’s next five league matches:
Liverpool (A)
Brighton (H)
Nottingham Forest (A)
Tottenham (A)
Everton (H)
Amorim is going into this weekend without too many injury worries, as only Mazraoui and L. Martínez are unavailable. As mentioned, Man Utd haven’t beaten Liverpool at Anfield in their last 9 PL attempts, but their manager could argue that these type of records are there to be broken.
Senne Lammens is expected to start in goal for the struggling Manchester team, with Yoro, de Ligt and Shaw a likely trio in front of the Belgian. Up front, Sesko, Cunha, Mbeumo and Mount will all be hoping to start the match, with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes expected to start in central midfield and Dalot and Diallo on the wingbacks. The Red Devils have scored 9 goals in their first 7 matches this season, having conceded 11, so we could be in for some goals in this match, both ways. Here are the odds for a few Man Utd players in the first goalscorer of the match market:
Sesko – 8.50
Cunha – 9.00
Mbeumo – 9.50
Zirkzee – 10.00
Predictions
Liverpool might have lost three matches in a row, but they’re usually very solid at home, and Man Utd haven’t beaten them in Liverpool in their last 9 attempts in the PL. We predict a Liverpool win here at 1.60, and an interesting bet could also be on over 3.5 goals at 2.02. Enjoy the match!
