25/26: Surprises and Disappointments

We’re in the middle of the second international break after the big leagues kicked off again, so let’s take a look at the situation so far in the big 5 leagues! Arsenal are ahead of Liverpool in the PL, Atlético Madrid have been struggling in Spain and Gasperini have taken Roma to joint 1st place in Italy so far.

England

Favourites to win title: Arsenal (1.92), Liverpool (3.75), Man City (5.00), Chelsea (26.00).

Relegation favourites: Burnley (1.30), Wolves (1.53), Sunderland (2.50), West Ham (2.50) and Nottingham Forest (3.75)

Liverpool got off to a good start, even beating Arsenal in late August, but Arne Slot’s team have struggled a bit lately, losing their last two league matches. Arsenal are top of the league after 7 matches, with Tottenham, Bournemouth (!) and Man City trailing them at the top.

Man City have only managed 4 wins in 7 matches, while their city rivals Man Utd are currently 10th with ten points after seven matches. In other words, it’s not been the best start of the season for any football fans from Manchester.

No teams have stayed unbeaten 7 matches into the season, and while we’re still early in the season, Arsenal and Liverpool seem like the best candidates to lift the trophy at the end of the campaign.

At the bottom of the standings, Wolves look destined for relegation, but they did that last season as well before turnings things around in the second part of the campaign. Burnley and West Ham are currently the other two teams in the relegation zone, with Nottingham Forest 1 point clear of relegation at the moment.

Spain

Favourites to win title: Real Madrid (1.83), Barcelona (2.00), Atlético Madrid (35.00), Villarreal (40.00).

Relegation favourites: Girona (1.90), Real Oviedo (2.00), Levante (2.75), Elche (4.00) and Mallorca (4.00)

It’s no surprise that Real Madrid and Barcelona have taken the top two positions in the standings 8 matches into the new season, with Villarreal and Real Betis currently in 3rd and 4th. What is more surprising is the failure of Atlético Madrid to put pressure on the frontrunners, with Simeone’s team having only managed 3 wins from 8 matches so far this season.

Just like in the PL, none of the teams have managed to stay unbeaten after the opening 8 matches, though Real Madrid have won their remaining 7 matches so far and are top of the table with 21 points.

Girona, Real Sociedad and Mallorca are currently in the relegation zone, with the former favourites to go down at 1.90. Don’t forget that we also have outrights out on top goalscorer and most assists!

Italy

Favourites to win title: Napoli (2.50), Inter (3.55), AC Milan (4.50), Juventus and AS Roma (both 11.00).

Relegation favourites: Hellas Verona (1.67), Pisa (1.72), Lecce (2.00) and Cremonese (2.25)

Napoli won their 4th league title last season, and they are odds favourites to win ‘lo Scudetto’ again this year. McTominay, Hojlund and De Bruyne have formed a great partnership in Naples, and Conte’s team are currently at 2.50 to retain the title. Roma might not have impressed too much in terms of gameplay this season, but they’ve still amassed 15 points from their first 6 matches, which puts them in joint 1st place with Napoli.

Inter and AC Milan are still stronger favourites to win the league ahead of Roma and Juventus, but the Giallorossi fans will certainly be hoping to see Gasperini work his magic in the capital after his arrival from Atalanta this summer.

Hellas Verona, Pisa, Lecce and Cremonese are the odds favourites to go down, in that order. As of now, Pisa are bottom of the league with only 2 points from 6 matches, and the newly promoted team was always going to struggle with life in the top division. Cremonese are currently 10th in the standings, having shocked just about everyone by beating AC Milan on the opening day in Milano.

Germany

Favourites to win title: Bayern Munich (1.04), Borussia Dortmund (17.00), Bayer Leverkusen (22.00) and RB Leipzig (50.00)

Relegation favourites: Heidenheim (1.57), Augsburg (2.50), St. Pauli (3.00), Borussia Monchengladbach (3.75) and Mainz (5.00)

Bayern Munich seem to be cruising towards another league title, having won all of their 6 matches so far this season. Borussia Dortmund are also undefeated, but their two draws means they are still 4 points behind their title rivals already, and their odds of winning the title is at 17.00.

The closest candidates to the aforementioned clubs are Bayer Leverkusen (22.00) and RB Leipzig (50.00).

Heidenheim are current favourites to go down at 1.57, with Augsburg, St. Pauli and Borussia Monchengladbach the other unfortunate top candidates for relegation. When it comes to the top scorer title, Harry Kane is the clear favourites, with Sehrou Guirassy the closest contender at 10.00.

France

Favourites to win title: PSG (1.20), Marseille (7.00), Monaco (19.00), Lyon (21.00) and Lille (50.00)

Relegation favourites: Metz (1.50), Anger (1.60), Nantes (2.35), Le Havre (2.70) and FC Nantes (3.50)

Just like Bayern Munich are in Germany, PSG are huge favourites to lift the league title in France. The CL winners and CWC runner-up are at 1.20 to lift the trophy again, with Marseille the closest challengers. The Parisians will have to be careful, though, as they’ve already dropped points in two of their 7 matches, with Marseille just 1 point behind them.

Strasbourg and Lyon have also had a very impressive start to the season, with both teams currently on 15 points, the same as Marseille. Monaco is another team that could challenge for a top spot this season.

At the bottom of the standings, Metz have only scraped together 2 points in their first 7 matches, with Le Havre, Nantes, Auxerre and Angers all struggling in or close to the relegation zone.
