Title decider in London tonight?
Arsenal could take a giant step towards the league title with a win against Liverpool this evening, and Arteta’s side are huge favourites to win at 1.58. The hosts are in great form, while Liverpool remain unbeaten in their last 9 matches, though their draw against Fulham last weekend was a huge disappointment. Let’s take a closer look at tonight’s big fixture!
Arsenal – Liverpool
Emirates Stadium – 08.01 @ 21:00 CET
What to expect from Arsenal
Arsenal are having a great season so far, topping both the PL and the League Phase in the CL. While they’ve won all of their games in Europe, they’ve suffered two defeats in the league, away at Liverpool and Aston Villa. Arteta’s side are solid at home, having won 9 of their 10 home matches in the league this season, with only Man City managing to escape Emirates with a draw back in September. Arsenal were lucky in that match to avoid defeat, with Martinelli scoring the equalizer in injury time.
Much has been said about Arsenal’s squad depth this season, with the players like Eze, Madueke, Gyökeres and Zubimendi all adding to an already impressive squad. Neither Madueke or Gyökeres have provided as many goals or assists as the Arsenal fans would have hoped for, but considering the results so far this season they won’t be too worried. Madueke has scored 3 goals in the CL, though he is still waiting for his first goal for the Gunners in the league.
Arsenal come into this match with a fairly healthy squad, with only Mosquera and possibly Calafiori to note regarding absentees. Saka is chasing a record as a goal from him would make him the first Arsenal player to score in 4 successive league home matches against Liverpool.
Arsenal’s last defeat was the away match against Aston Villa in early December, and they’re on a 5 match winning streak in the league, including an impressive 4-1 win at the Emirates against the very same Villa only a few weeks later.
Arsenal are big favourites here, with a bet on Arsenal (-1) 3-way handicap at 2.65. Could the league leaders cause even more problems for an Arne Slot already feeling the pressure at Liverpool?
What to expect from Liverpool
The defending champions have had a season to forget, with Slot’s team currently sitting 4th in the league 14 points behind tonight’s opponents. The Dutch manager has been under a lot of pressure, and questions has been raised regarding his man management, especially after the infamous Salah interview before Christmas.
Liverpool are actually on a long 9 game unbeaten run, not having lost since their heavy home defeat against PSV back in late November. That includes impressive wins away at Inter and Spurs, but also disappointing draws against Leeds and Fulham. In other words, Liverpool appear highly unpredictable this season, which is the opposite of what can be said of tonight’s opponents.
To add to their worries, Slot has a few more injury worries and unavailable players to worry about, with Salah away on international duty in Morocco, Isak injured and Ekitike, Leoni and Endo also out. Gakpo will probably be assisted by Szoboszlai, Wirtz and Jones, with Mac Allister and Gravenberch taking the deeper midfield roles.
Van Dijk, Konate and Alisson will have to be at their best if they are to avoid conceding goals against an Arsenal side that have scored 26 goals in their 10 home matches in the PL this season.
Arsenal are clear favourites here, but Liverpool have surprised us before, as in the aforementioned away win against Inter earlier this season, so Arteta’s side will have to keep their focus if they are to ensure a good result tonight.
