Who’s winning this year’s CL?

The French champions from Paris face the Nerazzurri in this Saturday’s CL final. Inter lost out to Napoli in the league this season, but are hoping to make up for it with another European trophy this weekend!

PSG vs Inter

Allianz Arena, Munich, Saturday @ 21:00

The last of the European finals is upon us, the pinnacle of European Football, the Champions League which this year will see PSG take on Inter in Munich. This is the fifth time that Munich will be the host city and PSG will be happy to hear that in all four of the previous finals a first time winner was crowned. PSG will certainly welcome such an omen as they have been chasing this trophy since they were taken over by Qatari investors in 2011.

Finally for PSG?

PSG will go into this match as favourites as they have beaten some excellent sides en route to the final and they look like a completely different team to recent years. It will be interesting to see them lift the trophy having moved past their era of superstar players with the likes of Neymar, Messi and Mbappe unable to deliver the success the club craves. Only three sides have played more CL matches without lifting the trophy than PSG, their record currently stands at 167 games, so they will feel they are due some success. The last French side to lift the coveted trophy was Marseille all the way back in 1993, when they got the better of AC Milan in Munich. Recent years have seen PSG dominate the domestic scene in France and this year was no different as they wrapped up the league title many weeks ago and their sole focus has been on this competition. PSG’s last appearance in the final was in 2020, when they were beaten by Bayern Munich and they will be hoping for a different result this time around. A win here would ensure PSG’s first ever quadruple, after making easy work of winning Ligue 1 and adding both domestic cup trophies to the trophy cabinet. They have a manager in Luis Enrique who has already won this trophy and he is aiming to be only the sixth coach in history to win the CL with two different clubs. Ousmane Dembele has been their star man this season, in particular in the second half of the season and he has been involved in 12 CL goals so far already this season, including a hattrick against Stuttgart. PSG got the better of three English clubs in previous rounds, no easy feat and will feel confident that they have what it takes to beat Inter.

First CL trophy since 2010 for Inter?

Inter’s last gasp heroic win over Barcelona sealed their place in this final and they will feel that luck is on their side in this competition. They will quickly need to put the disappointment of not winning the league title to the back of their mind though. They won on the last day of the season but Napoli also managed to get three points to pip them to the title. All focus is now on this trophy, which they last won in 2010 and they will be well aware that they will need some more of the luck that went their way when they got the better of Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and also Barcelona in the semis. Inter, in contrast to PSG, have a squad built on experience with over 40% of their minutes played in the CL so far by players currently over 30. Inter will go into this final with a squad that was largely present in the 2023 final against Manchester City, a match they lost. That might drive them on to be sure of becoming European Champions for the fourth time rather than taste defeat at the final hurdle for the second time in a few years. Lautaro Martinez has been the key man for Inter in this season’s competition, looking to be just the sixth player to score in all four knockout rounds of the same CL season and already having nine goals to his name in total. Inter have scored first in eleven of their fourteen CL matches so far this season, something they will be desperate to repeat in the final.

PSG are favourites to win (2.25) with Inter currently priced at 3.40. Finals tend to be tense affairs and this is likely to be no different, with Inter in particular likely to base their game on a solid defence. The first goal is likely to be key. We hope for an entertaining match to end the season and hopefully the best team on the day will win, whether we might end up with a first time winner or a four time Champion in Inter, whose season now rides on this one match.
